EAT. SLEEP. MOVE. >>> Now what exactly is that all about?
Well, it’s become my mantra with my work with my students. It also branches out to pretty much anyone I meet. I think that everyone deserves to have—make—beg, borrow and steal—the time it takes to take care of oneself. I absolutely HATE seeing people dragging ass (like all the time) because they are doing too much, they are overextended, and they simply don’t make choices that prioritize their health and well-being before everything else in their life. Personally, I think it’s f*cked up and just really sucks. Who wants to feel like shit everyday?
So my EAT. SLEEP. MOVE. mantra started to appear in my vocabulary in response to this crisis. And yes, I’m calling it a crisis. As a matter of fact, I regularly “poll” my students on how they are doing in each category. Quick—on a scale of 1 to 10—how are you doing in the sleep category? This one is typically the worst, especially in the life of a student, but really, I find that people are lagging (rating themselves 5 or lower) in all of the categories. So, what to do?
I’m not sure! But, this blog is intended to encapsulate my own process in mastering (if you will) these areas of life. I’ll be honest – if I had to rate my own self at this moment – here’s how I would fair: EAT <5> SLEEP <5> MOVE <5>. Fives all across the board. Not horrible, but not great. Here are my top-three challenges at the moment:
- I eat crap (especially sugar laden foods – read: double stuff Oreos, pop tarts, yes pop tarts, peanut M&M’s) at night, right before I go to bed. Right – not good!
- I still haven’t been able to start getting up at the same time everyday for the life of me. Back in May, Dr. Carl Johnson instructed our students on good sleep habits and this is one of the first steps in the process – figuring out just how much sleep you need!
- While I do pretty well in the MOVE category (I do something pretty much everyday) – I’m still not pushing myself to the degree that I want to (I like being comfortable which does not equal going balls out like I see others doing all around me).
So, there you have it. Just a teaser to wet the whistle. How are you faring in the EAT. SLEEP. MOVE. areas of life? I invite you to follow my adventures here and to reach out and connect – I LOVE hearing from others their secrets for rocking it out on a daily basis. After all, I think one of the greatest secrets is rocking it out in the EAT. SLEEP. MOVE. categories. It just makes everything else you do 10x better.
